Every time I push the thrust levers forward on the 737, I’m reminded how far aviation has come. I fly a medium-haul narrowbody jet for a living — but that’s just one of dozens of completely different types of planes sharing the skies at any given moment.
I’ve been around aircraft since my teenage years, from gliders, to single-engine Cessnas I trained on, to the Boeing 737-800 I fly today across Europe. In this guide I’ve broken down 25 different types of planes: from microlights and gliders all the way up to supersonic jets and military aircraft. What Types of Planes Are There?
There are three main categories of planes: passenger planes, cargo planes, and military planes. Within those three buckets sit dozens of sub-types that differ dramatically in size, speed, purpose, and cost.
General Aviation
General aviation covers any flying that isn’t commercial airline operations or military. It’s a vast and diverse world — everything from a microlight pottering over the English countryside to a turboprop business aircraft crossing Europe. Most people who learn to fly start here, and it was where my own journey began.

1. Single-Engine Piston
Single-engine piston aircraft are the most common aircraft in general aviation and the starting point for almost every pilot. The Cessna 152, Cessna 172, and Piper Warrior PA-28 are the most widely used training aircraft in the world — I learned to fly in a PA-28 myself.
They offer the lowest cost per flying hour of any powered aircraft, making them ideal for flight schools and student pilots. They’re forgiving to fly, have low maintenance costs, and can operate from grass airfields with runways as short as 400 metres.

2. Microlights
Microlights are the lightweight end of single-engine piston flying — lower take-off weights, smaller engines, and in many cases they can be flown on a Light Aircraft Pilot Licence (LAPL) rather than a full PPL, making them cheaper to get into. They come in three main forms: flexi-wing, fixed-wing, and powered parachutes.

3. Multi-Engine Piston
Step up from single-engine piston and you get the twin-engine piston — aircraft like the Cessna Seneca or Diamond DA-42. The key advantage is redundancy: if one engine fails, you fly on the other. They cruise faster, fly further, and carry more passengers than their single-engine counterparts.
For aspiring airline pilots, a multi-engine instrument rating — usually completed on a twin-engine aircraft like the DA-42 — is a mandatory step on the road to the airlines.

4. Aerobatic Aircraft
Aerobatic aircraft like the Extra 300L are built to withstand the forces that would tear a normal aircraft apart. They’re rated for G-loads between +5g and +9g, can complete negative-G manoeuvres, and feature reinforced structures and wide-view canopies.

5. Gliders
Technically, most gliders don’t have an engine — yet they’re still classed as aeroplanes. They get airborne via aerotow, winch launch, or self-launch. Once up, experienced glider pilots can stay airborne for 5+ hours by exploiting thermal lift, covering 300–500 km without a drop of fuel. Gliding also produces pilots with an exceptional feel for energy management.

Commercial Aircraft
Commercial aviation spans an enormous range — from small turboprops connecting remote regional airports to the A380 serving the world’s busiest hub routes.
6. Turboprop Commercial Aircraft
On shorter regional routes, turboprop aircraft play an essential role. Aircraft like the ATR 72 or the Dash 8 typically cruise at around 300 kts between 20,000 and 25,000 ft. Their lower landing weights mean shorter runway requirements, and they cost less to operate per sector than jets on short hops.

7. Small Passenger Jets (Regional Jets)
Small passenger jets typically seat fewer than 50 passengers. The Embraer ERJ-135 is a good example — designed for routes of 1–2 hours where there’s not enough demand for a full-size narrowbody. They cruise at Mach 0.75–0.78 and operate up to 41,000 ft.

8. Medium Passenger Jets
This is the category I know best — the Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 family are the most common aircraft on the planet, and the 737-800 is the aircraft I fly every day across Europe. These aircraft seat around 150–200 passengers in a single-aisle 3+3 layout, have a range of around 4,500 nm, and can cover routes from 45 minutes to 5 hours.

9. Large Passenger Jets
Large passenger jets — the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, Boeing 777, or Airbus A350 — are designed for transcontinental and transatlantic flying. The A350-1000 has a maximum take-off weight of 316 tonnes and can fly 10+ hours non-stop. These are widebody, twin-aisle aircraft. The 777-200LR and A350-900ULR can connect virtually any two major airports on the planet.

10. Very Large Passenger Aircraft
The Airbus A380 is the largest passenger-carrying aircraft in current commercial service, capable of carrying up to 800 passengers in an all-economy configuration or around 550 in a typical three-class layout. The Boeing 747 — once equally iconic — has been largely retired from passenger service, with only a handful of airlines still operating it. Both were designed to maximise capacity on slot-constrained hub routes.

11. Supersonic Commercial Jet Transport
Concorde remains the most famous supersonic passenger aircraft ever built. Cruising at between 50,000–60,000 ft at Mach 2, it could fly from London to New York in just over three hours. It was retired in 2003. As of 2026, Boom Supersonic is developing its ‘Overture’ aircraft targeting Mach 1.7. In January 2025, their XB-1 demonstrator became the first independently developed aircraft to break the sound barrier — a significant milestone for the programme. United Airlines has placed an order for 15 aircraft with options for 35 more, with passenger service targeted for 2029. Commercial supersonic passenger service has not yet resumed.

12. Cargo Aircraft
Cargo aircraft are the backbone of global supply chains. The Boeing 747-400F remains one of the most popular freighters, capable of carrying 128.5 tonnes — including through its iconic nose-loading door for oversized items. Cargo operators often fly aircraft retired from passenger service, as the economics can still work well for freight.

Private Aircraft
13. Small Private Jets
Small private jets like the Embraer Phenom 300 or Cessna Citation CJ3 offer performance comparable to regional airliners — Mach 0.75+ cruise, up to 45,000 ft — in a package that can often be flown by a single pilot. Range is typically up to 2,000 nm and capacity around 4–8 passengers.

14. Medium Private Jets
Medium private jets — think Gulfstream G550 or Bombardier Global 6000 — can fly non-stop between most major city pairs globally, carry 10–18 passengers, and offer a level of comfort that commercial first class can’t match. Some include crew rest areas for ultra-long-range operations.

15. Large Private Jets
Large private jets are typically commercial aircraft converted into bespoke interiors — the Boeing Business Jet (BBJ) range being the most prominent example. The interiors include bedrooms, showers, cinemas, and separate dining rooms. These are the domain of heads of state, royalty, and the ultra-wealthy.

16. Turboprop Private Aircraft
For shorter distances where jet performance isn’t needed, turboprop private aircraft like the Beechcraft King Air series are a cost-effective and practical choice. Cruising at around 300 kts between 20,000–25,000 ft, they offer a comfortable private cabin and lower operating costs than a jet.

Military Aircraft
17. Reconnaissance Aircraft
Military reconnaissance aircraft are designed to gather intelligence — ideally undetected. The SR-71 Blackbird is the most legendary example: capable of Mach 3+ and cruising at 85,000 ft, its defence was simply to fly too high and too fast for anything to catch it. Modern reconnaissance increasingly uses UAVs like the MQ-9 Reaper, which can loiter over a target area far longer than any crewed aircraft.

18. Airborne Early Warning and Control (AWACS)
AWACS aircraft are essentially flying battle management centres. Their distinctive rotating radar dome can track hundreds of aircraft simultaneously. Through secure datalinks, the AWACS picture can be shared with other aircraft without them needing to use their own radars — improving stealth and situational awareness across the entire force.

19. Fighter Jets
Fighter jets combine speed (typically Mach 1.5–2.5), manoeuvrability, and weapons systems for both air-to-air and air-to-ground missions. Modern fighters like the F-35 also carry high-resolution camera pods, giving them a secondary reconnaissance capability. Self-defence systems include electronic countermeasures, chaff, and flares.
20. VSTOL Aircraft
VSTOL aircraft can operate from locations with no conventional runway — including aircraft carriers without catapult launch systems. The Harrier Jump Jet and the V-22 Osprey are the most well-known examples. The F-35B is the current-generation VSTOL aircraft used by the UK’s Royal Navy and the US Marine Corps.
21. Air Refuelling Tankers
Tanker aircraft extend the range and on-station time of other aircraft by transferring fuel in the air. There are two systems: the boom method and the basket method. The basket method allows multiple aircraft to be refuelled simultaneously. Common tankers include the KC-135 Stratotanker and the Airbus A330 MRTT.
Other Specialist Aircraft
22. Water Bombers
Water bombers are used for firefighting — delivering large volumes of water or retardant over a fire in difficult terrain. The Canadair CL-415 is purpose-built for the role, capable of scooping up water from lakes or rivers while skimming the surface. Flying at low level over challenging terrain makes water bomber operations genuinely demanding work.

23. Medical Evacuation Aircraft
Medical evacuation aircraft transport seriously ill or injured patients to specialist medical facilities. They range from converted King Air turboprops to small jets equipped with a stretcher, medical equipment, and an attending physician. Medevac aircraft are routinely given priority routing by air traffic control.
24. Amphibious Aircraft
Amphibious aircraft can take off and land on both water and conventional runways. Fitted with floats or a boat-style hull, they serve remote communities accessible only by water and support search and rescue operations. Examples include the ICON A5 and the Dornier Seastar.
25. Crop Dusters
Crop dusters like the Piper PA-25 Pawnee are modified with storage tanks and wing-mounted spray nozzles to apply pesticides over farmland. They operate at very low levels — which increases exposure to hazards like power lines — and require highly skilled pilots.
